Inspection
Box spring inspections are difficult due to the many hiding places on the internal structure. The dust cover, the thin material on the bottom of the box spring, does not prevent bed bugs from entering the space. (Learn more about inspection).
Preferred Control Method
Isolation
This is the best option. Use a bed bug proof encasement that fits well and is completely sealed. (Learn more about isolation).
Other Control Options
Vacuum
Vacuum seams and gaps to remove visible bed bugs. This will not eliminate bed bugs, but can reduce the chances of bed bugs crawling away into new places. (Learn more about vacuuming)
Heat
Hair dryer or space heating. A hair dryer to heat up bugs and kill eggs can be used in combination with a vacuum, but may not be completely effective due to the large number of hiding places within a box spring. Whole space heating is effective for large furniture. (Learn more about heat).
Steam
This treatment may not be completely effective due to the large number of hiding places within a box spring. (Learn More about Steam).
Desiccant dusts
See this section for specific instructions. Always read and follow the label instructions. (Learn more about desiccant dust).
Not Recommended - Hand wash, Freeze
