Air Conditioners: Window mount, through the wall and stand-alone tower
Inspection
If the AC unit has been in a room with a known bed bug infestation, check carefully for signs of activity (fecal stains, live bugs). Look for shed skins at the floor beneath the unit. Take the unit apart to see the filter, for example, and check the interior. This is not 100% foolproof. You will need to do more than just inspect, but inspection can confirm that the AC has bed bugs. (Learn More about Inspection)
Preferred Control Method
Isolation
Remove the unit from the window or wall and place inside a heavy-duty plastic bag. Seal the bag so it is airtight. Store the unit for six or more months. (Learn More about Isolation)
Other Control Method Options
Hand wash
Wash the exterior and the filter. Do not wash any electronic parts. (Learn More about Hand wash)
Vacuum
Vacuum the unit thoroughly to remove visible bed bugs. This will not eliminate bed bugs, but will reduce the chances of bed bugs crawling away into new places. (Learn More about Vacuum)
Heat
Hair dryer or space heater - With the unit unplugged, a hair dryer can be used to push heat inside the unit to kill or chase bed bugs out. Work in an enclosed space to avoid spreading bed bugs. Most electronic devices can withstand heat of up to 160°F. Check the owner’s manual or call the manufacturer to confirm that the unit can withstand heat. (Learn More about Heat)
Not Recommended - Steam, Freeze, Desiccant dust
